At the beginning of the year I decided I wanted to do something that would develop my skills as a photographer. In this career I find that I am always challenging myself to grow and get better. I wanted something that would challenge me creatively, so I decided to document my family. The challenge I gave myself was to document my family for one day each month. The fact that I was pregnant and would be able to document my babies first year was an added bonus.
January began my challenge on a cold snowy day. I went about documenting life, dance parties in the kids rooms, making muffins with my toddler, heading out into the snow to play, whatever life brought us that day. I added in to the fun by introducing some fun activities, like coloring at the table.
Bedroom dance parties are a regular occurrence around here and something I had been wanting to capture.
When I caught her gazing our the window I grabbed a night stand drug it across the room and stood on it to get this shot.
I love her little eye peeking out.
I want capture every moment from the fun of making a snow angel to the twenty minutes that it took to get ready, just to be out in the snow for five.
I even taught my husband to use the camera, so that I could have documentation of myself with the kids.
The lighting here was horrible, but I wanted to capture her while she is still potty training, because even though it makes the days seem long I know someday I will even miss this.
I might have set this up, but it does happen like this often. Going into each month I have an idea of what I want to capture. I keep a list in my head of the day to day events that I want documented. Sometimes I have to recreated them otherwise it will never get documented.
The best part of all of this documentation is when I get an image that I can’t wait to print and hang on the wall. This one will be going in the laundry room someday soon.
